Valeo FC Captures Two FCUSA Coastal Cup Championships (Oct. 6-8, 2018)

Columbus Day weekend 2018

Valeo FC sent down 8 of its City teams to participate in the FCUSA Coastal Cup Tournament on Cape Cod. It was a great weekend full of football and fun. When it was all over, Valeo captured two Championships, one Second Place, and two semifinalists.

VFC East Boston 2006 (Champions)

The Valeo FC 2006 East Boston team traveled started off the tournament with a loss to the host team, FCUSA Coastal Elite. They finished group play with a record of 1-1-1 and squeaked into the knockout stage. The team came up against FCUSA Coastal Elite in the Championship match seeking revenge from their earlier loss. The game was tight throughout and regulation ended in a 1-1 draw. Layla Betancur scored the opening goal for the team to go up 1-0, but with a only a few minutes left in regulation FCUSA found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 and force penalty kicks. In penalty kicks, with the game tied 3-3, Layla again stepped up for her team. In the final kick of the match Layla buried her penalty and won the game for the team.

VFC Boston 2008 (Champions)

The Valeo FC 2008 Boston Boys traveled down to Cape Cod this weekend to play in FCUSA Coastal Cup. The team was on a mission to bring the trophy back to Boston. After a 4-4 tie and 5-0 victory in group stage, they qualified as the number 1 seed for knockout stage. In the semifinals they handled their opponents with ease as they put up an 8-0 scoreline to move on to the Championship. In the finals versus 2008 NEFC MB Elite boys, they were facing a 2-0 deficit with only 8 minutes remaining in their tournament hopes. They scored their first goal off of a corner kick and then tied the game up with only two minutes remaining in the game. Igor Alves stepped up for Valeo and scored his penalty kick to make things level at 1-1. On NEFC’s last shot, goalkeeper Nico Grady came up big with a diving save to keep the score level at 1. Despite a late second half injury, Valeo’s Kenny Mills stepped up to blast the game-winning PK past the opposing goalkeeper and win the game for his team.

VFC Boston City 2008 (Runners-Up)

The Valeo FC 2008 Boston City boys also traveled down to the Cape for the FCUSA Coastal Cup with a roster full of young players who were participating in their first tournament. The boys shocked everyone in group stage with a 1-1 tie against the tournament favorite and 3-0 victory to qualify for the semi-finals. After trading goals back and forth with the host FCUSA Boston in the semis, the game was tied at 3-3 after full-time. The game went straight to penalty kicks, and with the game tied at 1-1 entering the last penalty, Willi Alves-Pinto stepped up to take his penalty. He calmly placed his shot into the corner of the net to seal their place in the championship game. In the final, they played against the tournament favorite and could not overcome the odds and fell 3-0 to the tournament champs. We are beyond proud of our boys for making their incredible tournament run!
